Hi LUG,
Following a very informative tech talk by our own Michael Marley, I have
set up the LUG website to use TLS! Cool!
https://lug.ncsu.edu/
Next week's meeting will be a hack day. I will likely attempt to set up
Discourse that day and we can decide what to do about an email provider for
that, as well as make progress on content and design for opensource.ncsu.edu
.
Best,

Hi Marhn,
On October 25, I'll be giving a seminar entitled: STEM Education and
Critical Thinking with the Raspberry Pi
at Hunt Library. The URL to register is: http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/

Can you help me promote this around the College and University? Please
feel free to forward this to folks who might be interested.
Thanks,
Warren

Hello, everyone!
It may come as a surprise to you, but this email may be one of the last
you receive directly from me. Why, you ask? Because this Tuesday,
October 4th is the next LUG Hack Day, during which we will be setting up
a Discourse instance (http://discourse.org/) on our servers for future
club communication.
We will also be discussing further plans for our opensource.ncsu.edu
domain. If you fancy yourself as a designer, communicator, ambassador or
storyteller, we need your help in making this FOSS hub a reality!
A lot of exciting developments will be taking place, so we hope to see
everybody there! EBII, Room 3001, 7pm, as usual.

Wish I could attend meeting. Haven't made one yet :-( and I have been
lurking for a few years. But do want to keep up with the group. I'm a NCSU
CSC alum from 1991.
Please send out URL for us to register on discourse when you have it setup
for the LUG.
Thanks for all your doing for the group.

I think we're going to subscribe the mailing list to Discourse. It would be
foolish to dispose of the Majordomo list, in case some future LUG president
decides to tear all of this down and rebuild from scratch ;-)
Part of the reason for this switch is so we can make participation a little
more straightforward and public as opposed to a link to an obscure
majordomo instance.
Glad to hear we have people like you still lurking the list!

Hi LUG,
I'm pleased to announce that our Discourse instance is up and running, and
may be accessed at the following URL:
https://lug.ncsu.edu/discourse.
In the coming weeks we will be phasing out the use of this Majordomo
mailing list in favor of this new medium. You may sign up with any valid
email address. Accounts must be approved by the administrator (me) before
they are activated. This is purely a spam prevention measure. If we've
never heard of you, expect an email from me verifying you are not a spammer
before your account is activated.
Part of the reason we chose Discourse is that it implements a 'mailing list
mode', allowing users who do not wish to interact directly with the site to
receive messages posted to topics, and to reply to them, entirely by email.
It can also be configured to send digests at a frequency of your choosing
if you do not want to receive an email for each post. These options are
located in the settings panel for your account on the web interface.
Presently we are using a consumer GMail account as our SMTP relay. This
email address is:
discourse.ncsulug@gmail.[redacted]
Consumer GMail accounts are limited to ~100-150 emails per day. I do not
foresee this becoming an issue, but if it does, we can deal with it when it
arises.
Discourse provides a central forum for club communications solves the
recurrent problems of
- Users forgetting their Majordomo passwords and being unable to
unsubscribe from the list without contacting University IT
- Users getting excessive emails when we discuss a topic at length
- Conversations being, for all intents and purposes, ephemeral and
buried in the deluge of other emails I'm sure we all receive
- Showing club activity and providing potential members a way of
evaluating the club, as well as a familiar interface for those who may want
to join but are not familiar with traditional mailing list or IRC
My hopes are that this and other benefits will make it easier for the club
to communicate and result in higher member counts. We shall see.
I haven't decided what to do with this mailing list yet. I will probably
set it up so that the list gets weekly digests of Discourse. We will keep
it around as a fallback in case a future incarnation of the club decides
that they don't want to administer it anymore.
Best,
--
